The hotel moved my booking without speaking to me despite ringing them at 1130 hrs on the day of arrival. The booking had been made in March 2010 for a stay in August but they felt it necessary to move me to a different hotel despite people making bookings just 4 days in advance of their visit. I argued the point that I had specifically chosen the Carlton because of its reputation and didn't want to move to another hotel. I was informed that they had no rooms and there had been an oversight in the booking system. I continued to push my point and requested to speak directly to the person responsible for booking and that she comes with a copy of the booking they had made for me in the other hotel. After some time the duty manager returned and in a perfect impression of an excited 12 year old told me she had managed to find me a room. This leads me to believe that this hotel either moved someone else or was lying about being full in the first place. The room cost £190.00 for one night. Whilst I accept that for a 4 star hotel in the centre of Edinburgh this could be considered quite reasonable, the room itself felt like a single room in a 2 star. Having stayed in the Midland in Manchester the weekend before, which is also a 4 star hotel the difference in quality is astounding.

Great location, breakfast good, staff friendly, but it needs air conditioning in summer! Rooms are very hot and windows only open a fraction (Health and safety rules apparently!).
Apparently the front of the hotel is noisy, I emailed in advance and requested a quiet room and got it.

If you are coming by train and don't know Edinburgh, come out of the station at Market St, turn right, then left up Cockburn St which brings you on to the high street. Turn left and left again onto North Bridge Rd.

Whilst some staff were wonderful and the location was central, a faulty fire alarm that required 4 evacuations within 2 days (with a small baby) meant the stay was not entirely pleasurable.

We were disappointed to hear that the swimming pool was pretty cool, so didn't have a swim.
No luggage rack in room for suitcases.
Dust visible in room. Excellent location close to Princes Street and the castle.

My only complaint would be the tourist shop across the road place a bagpipe cd on a loop really early in the morning and throughout the day!!
