The room was very cold but Housekeeping supplied me with a heater. I actually had to stay a second night as no trains were travelling to Inverness due to weather conditions. Again the room was rather cold but I decided to put up with it. However, at approx. 2.30a.m. I was awakened by a constant clicking noise and could not get back to sleep. At 4 a.m. I phoned reception and asked if they could tell me what was causing this - I had tried switching off the heating. The nightwatchman, Tommy offered me a change of room but as I was getting up at 6 a.m. I saw no point in doing this. I mentioned this to the lady at the desk in the morning as after all I paid good money for a good night's sleep which I never got but felt that she was not too interested.

Only one person on reception and big queue. Waited far too long. There was what looked like a manager on little desk just passed the toilets but he never made any effort to go through to reception. Went for breakfast 9.20am, had to wait 15minutes for seat, one member of staff did come through saying they were setting up clean tables and would seat us shortly then when we eventually sat down there were no teaspoons, no napkins, no butter, no preserves, tea was cold. Cutlery was VERY dirty. Dont say you did not know you were going to be so busy as you knew by the bookings. For rooms to cost so much and to be treated like this was disgusting. Everybody was complaining about breakfast wait, totally unacceptable.

I contacted reception twice regarding the window sill in the room which was in a filthy state. I was assured on both occasions that action would be taken. It never was. There was no feedback from any member of staff. My wife and I had stayed at the hotel twice previously and liked the facilities provided. After our most recent visit we will certainly NOT be back.

The Conan Doyle Bar restaurant is excellent value for money. Also the Theatre bar next to Playhouse is also very good. if you are looking for a restaurant at night The Stockbridge is lovely. very upmarket but worth every penny for a special occasion.

Excellent location. Room generally very good and clean - However, bathroom was cold - needs underfloor heating. Staff member (male) at check in was indifferent and did not explain about hotel facilities. Conversely, Staff member at check out (female) was a good ambassador

The Dome Restaurant nearby was very good. Tour bus ticket including three main attractions - castle, Holyrood Palace and Royal Yacht was good value.
